Serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase ratio as an early predictor to assess dengue severity

Background: Dengue fever is a benign syndrome caused by arthropod borne viruses which transmitted infective bite of particular mosquito known as Aedes aegypti, day time biting mosquito, the principal vector disease. Although liver not major target organ, hepatic dysfunction well recognised and can be used an early predictor to assess dengue severity looking at ratio serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), glutamic pyruvic (SGPT) levels. Studies using SGOT/SGPT were very few, hence need for study.Methods: Ratio SGOT SGPT considered in children admitted under department paediatrics Sapthagiri Institute Medical Sciences Research Centre, Bangalore. A total 100 aged between 0-15 years with signs symptoms dengue. Informed consent was obtained detailed history taken. For all cases, serology rapid ELISA done our hospital. Children positive NS1, IgM, IgM+ IgG included study admission taken followed up clinical profile. Results: ratio<1 had lesser duration hospital stay complications when compared >1.Conclusions: predict severity, outcome.
